In addition to being technically innovative, the Air Jordan 3 had to be different and most importantly, make Michael Jordan fall in love. The elephant skin design, the visible air unit in the heel, the embroidered Jordan logo on the tongue, the four different color combinations for the launch, and a clothing line based on the shoe; they got Jordan to choose to stay with Nike (and Tinker) for the production of his (now) mega-famous sneaker and apparel brand.
